Aircraft Cable FAQs

How does aircraft cable differ from wire rope?
Aircraft cables are available in smaller diameters than wire rope. For example, aircraft cables are available in 3/64 in. diameter while most wire ropes begin at a 1/4 in. diameter.

What are the differences among Stainless Steel and Galvanized aircraft cable?

  • Galvanized aircraft cable is galvanized drawn. In mild environments it’s an economical alternative to stainless steel.
  • Stainless Steel aircraft cable is made up of corrosion resistant steel wires and is therefore the highest quality aircraft cable available. While it tests at approximately the same pulling strength as galvanized aircraft cable, it lasts longer under harsh conditions such as salt water and acidic (caustic) envrionments.

What is the difference between types 302/304 and 316 Stainless Steel aircraft cable?
Type 316 has a higher corrosion resistance ranking than type 302/304, while type 302/304 has a higher strength and fatigue resistance ranking. As the carbon content of the stainless steel alloy increases, strength and fatigue resistance also increase, but corrosion resistance is reduced.
