Cable For Climbing Structures

The Challenge

Our customer, Luckey Climbers, is an innovative design and build firm that creates children’s climbing structures for museums, playgrounds, and other venues. Their unique, three-dimensional structures are a combination of fun for kids and are a sculpture in form. Each of their bespoke designs offers a one-of-a-kind experience for the children who get to climb them.

We began working with Luckey Climbers when they inquired about phthalate-free coated cable. They’ve been using it as netting in order to create the safety requirements for these truly interesting and unique “jungle gyms” for kids. Phthalates are used in some applications as plasticizers – substances that will increase flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity of the product. However, for the assembly built from this cable to be safe for use by children, it needed to be in-line with the CPSIA ban on phthalates in children’s products.

The Solution

Because of the special nature of the request by Luckey Climbers, we worked carefully to offer a solution that was phthalate free while matching the requirements of the application. Durable and resistant to rust, moisture, dust, dirt, and heavy impact that can lead to damage, our phthalate-free coated cable offered the flexibility and safety needed by Luckey Climbers.

The Results

The coated cable found in Luckey Climbers’ structures is typically included in the climbing portions of the structure as well as the walls and platforms. What is interesting is that, when watching the children scrambling throughout the climbing area, it gives the illusion that everything is “floating” in the air. In fact, Luckey Climbers often refer to their projects as “invisibly-supported structures.”

Luckey Climbers playgrounds are located in children’s museums around the world. It is a chance for children to receive a diverse and one-of-a-kind interactive experience, and Lexco® Cable is proud to provide some of the coated cable used to create these playgrounds.
